Once an individual completes a 30 day inpatient residential drug alcohol rehab,they should be fixed, sober and ready to go home to resume life as a sober person. That would be great, if that was typically the case. Where do you put your trust?

We all have faith and trust in something, but more often than not it is usually in money, things or people. Everything has an expiration date, and if we can really get that, it can make our lives much easier.

Most of us are so busy trying to get somewhere, that it never occurs to us that nothing is really happening, but right now. Moreover, whatever we are experiencing in our life, we have created via mental focus and intention.

If I were to believe that the only way I can get anything in life, whether it be money, job, housing or companionship, is from a "person", I would have created a mental prison for myself. Additionally, I would be unable to live freely with no worries of what others opinions were of me. When I rely on a person for instance to get all of my needs met, my whole existence will be directed toward managing that person's image of me.

When I started my precarious spiritual journey, that was completely non religious, I started to feel better than I had in my whole life. At that time I was in my late 30's. The first thing I did, which took approximately 5 years to really do, was simplify my life, which had previously been all about "getting somewhere", financially. I had been taught by my parents that the goal in life was to get the most stuff. Then we would sit around and drink, and drink, and talk about it.

How boring. And it was boring, for a long, long time. You can turn on any court show on tv today and watch people crucify each other for a 100.00 cell phone bill, or taking their stuff. If it is correctly understood, it is not the "stuff", it is their faith and security that they have in their stuff, and are very afraid to lose.

Even though I wanted to quit my 6 figure job, which I now hated, I constantly struggled with the thought of who I would be if I did not have my title and my Armani suits. (that's why it took 5 years) Who would I be without my job and my stuff...that was where my faith and trust resided.

Today I never worry about money, companionship or getting any of my needs met. And although I made more money in the past, I have more now. Go figure? I give away everything I don't really need, and it is always replaced with something better. This is the true law of abundance, which most of us have a very hard time understanding. The problem is, we have to give and forget. Most of us want to keep a mental tally, score board and want recognition for everything we give or do. Is there an invisible string of expectation attached to everything you give or do? It takes too much energy and unhappiness to live that way, and it is completely devoid of real joy.

If you know your source, you can do this. Where is your faith and trust today?

The way I knew I had a shift in awareness, was that at the ripe old age of (let's just say my 40's), after years of fighting with ex's over furniture, money, property, etc. Paying ridiculous sums of money to move and store my "stuff", that on my last move across the country I gave it all away. Let me just say, this was very nice stuff, things that I loved and enjoyed. However again, everything has an expiration date. So, I gave away all of it, with the exception of some clothes and my dog.

Moreover, I never thought about it again. When I landed at my new residence, everything I needed was provided. Today my trust is in something much bigger than myself, not a person, job or institution.

When we rely on these things for our security, we cut ourselves off from real joy and true prosperity.

Fanatics in any belief system do more to separate people than unite them

The inherent problem with any absolute line of thinking and belief system, is that we can truly believe our way is the only way to be, and as a result we develop limited or no tolerance for any one elses belief. This happens in Christianity, AA, and many other groups.

In AA, this individual can acquire the nick name of Big Book thumper. Since AA so radically saved and transformed their lives, when nothing else could, they now believe AA is the only way, or the only "right" program for alcoholism or drug addiction recovery.

Any absolute belief system breeds intolerance to others and creates separation. This way of being in the world fosters arrogance, pride, judgement and negativity, all emotions that are destructive to the human psyche.

When we expand our awareness to honor and accept other people's belief systems, we expand our own life in the process, and sometimes even learn something wonderfully new. The Buddha says that we are all like tea cups, some empty, some full, some half full. We may be looking for the meaning of life, and even though we may find it in places we never expected, if our cups are too full of what we already know, there is no room for anything new.

Let's empty our cups, and remain open. Now life becomes an adventure based on love, acceptance and kindness.

Accountability is an important part of recovery

Support groups and sponsors are a critical element in the recovery program for alcoholics and addicts. Many find they can not do it alone. Support groups and sponsors are people a person in recovery will seek out, and ask to be accountable to. Usually they pick someone who has a longer more established period of successful sobriety and walks their talk.

Forming accountability relationships in recovery helps the alcoholic to feel that he is not alone and that he always has someone to call if and when he starts to feel shaky. Amazingly, just a phone call to someone who has good sobriety, and works a good recovery program can avert many a disaster.

This is a paramount attribute of the 12 step programs, however now many Christian churches, and non-12 step support groups are available, and usually if a person wants help, he just need look ever so slightly. This is something Bill W., founder of Alcoholic Anonymous realized.

Life demands that we react and respond to daily demands of work, school, and survival in general. Alcoholics and addicts use substances to find relief from this often times crazy world we live in.

Unfortunately, the short lived relief will often times turn circumstances bad from the substance abuse. When first embarking on a program of recovery, we need to learn how to slow down. AA has slogans such as, "Easy Does It", First Things First, and "More Shall be Revealed", or "Be Here Now".

This takes a while, and depending on the individual, it can take years to learn how to live in the present moment of life, and not in the thoughts in ones head.

As I watch people in life, it is easy to see people who are present, and those who are not. Standing in the express grocery line the other day, a woman in front of me had 1 small frozen dinner she was holding in her hand, and waiting next in line to check out. I was behind her with a basket of things that was quite heavy, but could not set them down because she was staring into space and blocking the moving belt. I was hoping she would make eye contact and acknowledge me.

There was also an older woman behind me, who had only a few items, but I could see they were very heavy for her, and she was anxious to put them down too. There was plenty of room, if this woman could break out of her self induced spell and see us.

Finally, I could not take it any more as I hopefully waited for this woman to become aware that other people existed in her world and said excuse me, if it is OK, we are going to set our items down. She barely became present and nodded.

The woman behind me was relieved and we had a nice exchange regarding trivial banter.

I wish I could say that I am always present, however I do this too. We get caught up in our own thoughts about past or future things, and miss the opportunity to live now. So today, as we endeavor to live in the now, we challenge you to live in the moment too, be present, be open, be available, and remember...easy does it. New Life Recovery Network

The outcome of an individual attending addiction treatment to get clean & sober can be precarious. Why, well let's say a person "wants" to get sober and stop drinking. That person will have a better chance in succeeding than the individual who is "pushed or forced into rehab. The essential component for a successful outcome, is willingness.

Without willingness for a different way to live, a defense to the new information is established. Resistance and defensiveness are not conducive to lasting behavioral changes. However, not all is lost to the unwilling participant. At the very least, attending and participating in a top residential drug or alcohol rehab program exposes one to new ideas and ways to consider life without the aid of drugs or alcohol.

Even the person who attends rehab for 30 days, and then goes back out to drink or use, will never quite be the same again. They have now been exposed to information that may affect them now, or even years later. They may not be willing to heed the suggestions now, because maybe they are unable to see that their life can benefit from a sober life...and things have not gotten bad enough (in their estimation). However, when the day comes when things have spiraled out of control, they will think back to their fist go around with rehab.

So at the end of the day, it is a good thing if one can participate willingly or even unwillingly in addiction treatment.

Many children raised by alcoholics experience and share common characteristics. Some of the shared characteristics include having an over developed sense of responsibility, deep feelings of shame, difficulty connecting with others, and always having to be in control. However, at the other side of the spectrum some just give up and feel completely ineffectual. ACoA's usually live in extremes, everything is either black or white.

Adult children of alcoholics (ACoAs) can suffer from serious depression, and may not have acknowledged that they never had a childhood. ACoA's tend to isolate and do not feel at ease around others. Adult children of alcoholics live by the 4 primary rules in all alcoholic homes: Denial, Isolation, Rigity and Silence.

50 to 60% of adult children of alcoholics may end of marrying alcoholics, becoming one, or both. One of the best books available for those who think they may be suffering from issues stemming from a life of being raised by one or both parents who are alcoholic is: Recovery: A Guide for Adult Children of Alcoholics by Herber L. Gravitz and Julie D. Bowden. Adult Children of Alcoholics usually appear totally normal on the outside, in fact they typically appear to be above average in physical appearance and worldly accomplishments.

ACoA's have mastered 'image management', however at the core of their being can lie deep feelings of shame, fear of abandonment, and betrayal. They have difficulty with intimate relationships and they tend to isolate. They are survivors, in the largest sense of the word. ACoA is an organization to support Adult Children of Alcoholics. Al-Anon is another good support group for those affected by addiction, however ACA is designed specifically to address the needs of the Adult Child of Alcoholics. Here is a description of the Adult Child as presented by ACA.

The first step is understanding that what you are feeling is a result of the circumstances you were raised in, however it does not have to control you for the rest of your life. Recovery is difficult, but worth it. Treatment and therapy are needed to help resolve the unresolved conflict. Many ACoA's suffer from Chronic Shock Syndrome, and may not even be aware of it.
